At 7am this morning I went to see a local physiotherapist, to get a professional opinion on my shin pain. 25 minutes later I had been examined standing, lying down, through ultrasound and running both on a treadmill and outside. The end result is that I have a minor separation of the connective tissue on the inside of my right ankle where the muscle has started pulling it away. I also learnt that my feet come slightly towards the midline when I run, and that I don't use my heel when running, but land directly on my forefoot.
I've been given some exercises to strengthen my leg abductors, including side lunges and side-step squats. I'm also going to look at forefoot specific shoes. These have padding at the front, rather than the heel like most shoes, but the man in the tortoise and hare in Cranleigh didn't sound so keen so I'm going to check out some reviews before changing.
Most importantly I got permission to start running again, as long as it's slow and stays pain free. With that confidence received I can now present my training plan leading up to the Barns Green half marathon. Of course it's possible I'll try to run tomorrow and be unable to, in which case it'll be another two weeks rest before I try again. The plan can be found here.
Fingers crossed for tomorrow, I'll let you know how it goes.
