6 September 2013 - Running into the sunset

Map: Here

If you've read my last post then you know I was annoyed this week, but this run made everything okay. I started off heading down the down's link towards Christ's Hospital, planning to do one mile easy, five miles at half marathon pace (because who needs to follow the training plan?). It was going great, 7:15 min/mile, 176 bpm, solid.

I had to go on the road to get to the next section of the down's link, and clearly a train had just stopped at Christ's as I had to dodge four cars. I don't like running fast on the road, but needs must. As I powered over the bridge and onto the next section of the down's link I was on this, and then I had to work out how far to go to get home.

My maths is awful when I run, so aiming for six miles I played it safe. To make it more complex I was going to go home via Itchingfield church and get a proper loop done. I decided to turn at about 4.2 miles, as it turned out this was way too late for six miles. To make it worse my calf started hurting, probably because of the rounders game the night before (we lost 65-25 to a client if anyone cares).

So I walked, I slowed down and walked, and I quite enjoyed it. As soon as I slowed the pace the pain disappeared and I could enjoy the gentle stroll. It helped that I had been smashing target pace up till this point, 3.5 miles in about 7:15 min/mile and feeling comfortable. Definitely feel able to do the half in 7:30s.

Having got to five miles I gently jogged it home, the leg felt alright if a little naggy and having popped a couple of Ibuprofen I'm confident I'll be good to go for Sunday. Plan is 6 miles easy, 6 miles half marathon. 64 miles to go...

Distance: 7.48 miles
Time: 1 hour 5 minutes 4 seconds
Pace: 8:41 min/mile
Heart Rate: 163
