26th March - The night I got lost

Having got Cranleigh under my belt relatively pain free it was time to step up the mileage and get serious in preparation for the marathon, to do this I started introducing more mid-week runs, as well as increasing the length of everything I did. The plan this day was just to do a solid 3 miles up at Newland's corner in Surrey. As you can guess this didn't go quite to plan.

26th March 2013

Distance (miles): 4.06
Time: (mm:ss): 41:27
Pace (mins/mile): 10:09

The run started off well, holding an 8-8:20 pace for the first mile. I then went up the hill and decided to do a clever loop along the ridge and then down back into the valley. This went okay for the first half a mile, though the difficult ground slowed the pace significantly. Then I turned off the path too soon and got very lost. Only the map really does this justice, but at one point I crossed the path I was looking for, and when I thought I was heading back to the car park along the edge of the golf course I was actually heading away.

Eventually it came to a point where I found the main path, but didn't know which way to go along it. This was 3 miles in, though due to the nonsense I was going through I hadn't really been running consistently or hard. Eventually I picked a direction and it turned out to be correct, thank goodness.

Just over a mile later and I was back at the car park. I never really got back into a rhythm, The pace rose over time from 9:00 min/mile to 13:00 min/mile. Part of this was the hill, but to be honest I was just not in it.
