Week commencing 10th June 2013 - The beginning of cross training

I was supposed to take a week off until Wednesday, but due to the pain taking longer to subside than it ever has before it's been decided that I'm going to take a much longer break from running. If things go smoothly I'm going to start again in a months time. Due to this I have no idea how ready I'll be for the Barns Green half, though I do plan to run it to see what happens. In the meantime in order to stop myself going insane I'm doing a variety of non-impact sports to tide me over, as well as hopefully maintain some of my fitness.

On Monday  I spent an hour and a half climbing at Surrey sports park in Guildford.

Thursday afternoon I went for a 50 minute cycle, covering somewhere between 15 and 20 miles. Unfortunately it only occurred to me to wear the GPS watch about 10 minutes after I set off, hence the uncertainty in distance. The route went out to Girton from Canterbury street, on to Oakington and then to Cottenham. From here I headed towards Huntingdon but turned around at the A14. From there I headed to Histon, and then back up Histon Road to Canterbury Street.

At least that's what I think I did, as all the little villages look similar around Cambridge. I pushed fairly hard most of the time, though I'm sure the strong winds and slightly flat tyres made it feel harder than it should have been. Apart from one near miss with a car it was a very pleasant ride in good weather.

Friday morning I went swimming with Emma in Parkside pools. I am a bad swimmer, it's not the moving through the water but the breathing I have issues with. Particularly when doing front crawl if I try to breath properly and keep my head under the water some of the time I'm left gasping after half a length. Being injured at least provides an opportunity to work on this deficiency.

After significant work I managed to consistently swim a length without being forced to stop for air. Slow, spluttering progress, but progress non the less. This definitely got the heart and lungs going, and by capping it with 10-15 lengths of breaststroke I got the muscles working as well. Hopefully I'll get down to the pool late next week to build on this start. Unfortunately work precludes any efforts sooner.

  1. Sorry to hear about the injury, hope it doesn't keep you out for too long, is it still your knee? I'm assuming this is why you're not doing the Brighton 10k then?

    1. Not the knee, beginnings of a stress fracture in my leg. Now able to act day-to-day without pain most of the time.

Honestly didn't fancy the 10k. I will still do the Barns Green 1/2 if all goes to plan which is before the 10k.
