11 July 2013 - First 2 Miler

Today I was upping the distance for the first time, aiming to see if doing 2 miles would irritate my shin. I went out the same route as last time, but continued onto the down's link and so added another mile. I was feeling pretty damn good, and completed the first mile in 08:48 while staying at target heart rate the whole time.

A quarter mile after turning I felt a little pain in my lower leg, and so dialled the pace right back to about 11 minute miles. On reflection I'm not sure if this was actually due to the still healing shin splints or just generally getting used to running again. I certainly didn't have any pain in that area afterwards, so that's a good sign it's continuing to heal well.

My first real speed work is planned for 3 weeks time, with a series of 1k pace intervals. I'm not sure whether I'll do these or not, especially as I don't particularly need to at this stage to continue to improve for the half, it depends how the next few weeks are.
