13 August 2013 - A change of scene

As I'm at college in King's Cross I've been staying up in Cambridge with Emma, and so come Tuesday we headed off together for a 3 mile run. Per the plan this is a rest week, and so all my run's are a mile shorter than last week, in order to allow a bit of de-loading and extra recovery. Due to the fairly easy training I've been doing this probably isn't necessary yet but it'll become necessary at some point in the future so it seems best to start now.

At the start of this run I felt pretty rubbish. I'd had aches in various muscles as well as a sore throat during the previous couple of days and so was definitely not expecting fireworks. In fact it was bad enough that by the end of the first road I wanted to give up but couldn't due to the company I was with, so ploughed onwards.

Originally I was just going to run down the main road to Girton, but Emma had a better idea and so we did a loop towards the vet school and then back up Storey's way. At least that was what we were aiming for but part of the route was closed due to demolition work. As we didn't fancy that we cut through part of the Department of Botany and back onto our original route. If none of that makes sense check the map at the end and hopefully it will all become clear.

As the run went on I continually felt better. I started off at an 11 minute/mile pace, and completed the first mile in 10 minutes 12 seconds. As the run continued it felt like the aching worked it's way out of my system, but I guess that's the idea of recovery pace running. With this improvement the pace increased, finishing at about 9:20 min/mile. I guess it goes to show that it's worth giving a run a proper go before giving up.

After the run I bought myself a couple of nutrition books. Those who know me know that I don't pay much attention to what I eat. I don't know if I'll actually change my diet once I've read about it but as one of the three pillars of running (along with training and rest) I figured I should at least give it a look.

Distance: 3.01 miles
Time: 29 minutes 50
Pace: 9:54 min/mile
Average HR: 159
