2/3 August 2013 - Rounders and running

Work hold socials every few months but they don't usually make it onto this blog. I'm including the rounders game because there were 6 fielders covering a field the size of a cricket pitch, with 4 of them on bases most of the time, and while no-one hit it right to the boundary it did result in a significant amount of sprinting to fetch the ball and round the bases.

These sprints were probably only 60 meters or so, but doing 20 or 30 and having not done any speed work since being injured it didn't take much before it started to ache. This confirms that I was right to take fast work out of the training plan, though I would have been quite happy without the confirmation. We came last of the three teams as well.

The running on the Friday night meant that on Saturday morning my leg was aching before I got out of bed. I thought about calling the run off, but figured I'd make a start and stop when my leg hurt. For a change of scenery I set off up the road on Bashurst Hill (Map at the end as usual).

From everything I've read it's a good idea to mix up the surface you're running on, but this road was not suitable. The camber at the edges is so severe that you're essentially running on a 30 degree angle the whole time and that's before you take into account the tight corners.

When I got started it actually felt okay, and at 1.1 miles I had to consciously slow down  as I was running 9:30 min/mile. At 1.7 miles I decided to cut the run down to 3 miles total, and so turned around and started heading back home. It was a good job I did as at 2.3 miles the pain became consistent and I had to stop completely. Turning round when I did only left a mile to walk home, rather than nearly 2.

122 miles to go...

Distance: 2.30 miles
Time: 22 minutes 50 seconds
Pace: 9:56 min/mile
Heart rate: 155 bpm
