Today's run was undertaken in deeply unpleasant conditions. It was humid and hot, especially underneath the natural arch of the trees. Even when it started to cool down out in the fields the canopy held the heat, at times it felt like running while wearing a moist blanket. Deeply unpleasant.
On the positive side I finished the 4 miles without leg issues. I expect anyone who reads this regularly is fairly bored of hearing about my calf, but unfortunately it looks like it's going to shape my ability to run at least until the half marathon at the end of September.
I mentioned in my last post that the plan has been severely toned down. It now consists of 90% easy work, with half marathon pace work almost entirely restricted to during the week. Obviously this isn't great preparation for running the actual half marathon but if I can complete it healthy and with a base of 20 miles a week to build on then I can start to introduce speed and threshold work afterwards. It should also allow me to continue increasing the miles per week up to about 30 for the marathon.
Obviously this is all quite far away, and secretly I'm hoping to increase the work I do before the marathon. I toned it down so far because I got sick of having to reduce the work I was doing time after time. Of course that does mean that if I have to reduce it again I'll be even more upset, mostly because it will probably mean I can't actually do Barns Green. Guess we'll have to wait and see. 126 miles to go...
