25 July 2013 - Working 9 to 5 (thirty)

This run really showed the difference between a hard day at work before a run and an easy one. Today I did the same route as Tuesday, same target heart rate and the same company. It was even the same time of day, though the temperature was a little lower.

The difference in the running was huge. Today felt light and easy, where Tuesday felt heavy and difficult. The pace was 20 seconds per minute faster while the average heart rate was 8 bpm lower. This just goes to show how much of a difference everything outside of running has on the way a run goes. It's another thing I need to keep in mind going forward. Sometimes a hard day at work will require an easier run, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Going forwards I need to focus on how a run feels, not just the numbers on the watch. The heart rate monitor helps to give an indication, but developing an inherent understanding is a more reliable and eventually more accurate indicator. This is especially true when my heart rate monitor tells me I'm over 200 bpm half way through an easy run where it doesn't otherwise get over 170.

Developing feel takes time though, and in the mean time the watch does a very good job.

Distance: 4.01 miles
Time: 40 mins 12 seconds
Pace: 10:01 min/mile
Average HR: 146 bpm
